New Year, New Trends

A new year brings new beginnings, fresh goals, and hopeful energy. In New York State, it also brings new trends in gambling. Those changes fostered a growing movement focused on support, wellness, and community recovery. While gambling opportunities continue to evolve, one of the most inspiring trends is the increasing number of people choosing connection, support, and positive action.

Community Outreach

Across the state, more residents are learning about gambling harms and how they can protect themselves and others. The conversations around gambling are shifting. Instead of staying silent, people are speaking up, asking questions, and engaging with resources designed to help them take control of their well-being. This movement is fueled by dedicated organizations, community members, and recovery groups working together to make 2026 a year of hope and empowerment.

Community Support

Many individuals are discovering uplifting ways to take charge of their health. Some are choosing to set personal limits, step back from gambling, or focus on new hobbies and social activities. Others are attending support groups where they can share their experiences and learn from others on the same path. These communities offer encouragement, honesty, and the reminder that recovery is not only possible, it’s something to be proud of.

Working with local organizations is another trend gaining momentum. More people are partnering with prevention specialists, youth programs, faith communities, and recovery advocates to spread awareness and create safer environments. When neighbors come together to protect one another, they build stronger, healthier, more supportive communities.

As we enter the new year, the message is clear: you are not alone, and support is always within reach. Whether you’re seeking help for yourself, supporting a loved one, or looking to get involved in community efforts, New York offers caring, judgment-free resources ready to guide you.

Community Organizations

An inspiring trend this year is the growing reach of the Problem Gambling Resource Centers (PGRCs) across New York State. These centers are available in every region, offering free, confidential support to anyone who is concerned about their gambling or someone else’s. The PGRCs:

  • Help people understand the signs of gambling harm,
  • Explore treatment options, and
  • Connect with trained counselors and peer support.

They also work closely with community groups, schools, and service providers to build stronger networks of care. They are a growing team of compassionate individuals, connecting with compassionate individuals, who are all passionate about supporting individuals, families, and the community.

One leader who has been driving this effort since 1994 is the New York Council on Problem Gambling (NYCPG). The mission of the NYCPG is simple but powerful: to increase awareness about problem gambling and connect people with help. NYCPG doesn’t take a stand for or against gambling itself, they focus on people, families, and communities, helping them stay safe, informed, and supported. Their educational programs, annual conference, outreach efforts, and partnerships aim to make sure no one has to face gambling harms alone.

The NYS agency funding, developing, and supporting prevention, treatment, and recovery resources is the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS). Working collaboratively with NYCPG and PGRCs, OASAS has been a driving force supporting and increasing resources across New York. One of those major services is the HOPEline.
